The European Parliament Examines the Request for Waiver of the Immunity of MEP Frank Vanhecke
09/09/2008 :: Guido Naets, Former Press Spokesman of the European Parliament, Defends MEP Vanhecke
The committee on legal affairs (JURI) of the European parliament yesterday examined the request of the Belgian authorities to waiver the immunity of Frank Vanhecke, MEP, to enable his persecution for so-called 'racism' for a text he didn't write. He risks the loss of his political rights, and therefore the loss of his European mandate, and the possibility to take part in the 2009 European elections. The national bureau of the Vlaams Belang this morning decided that Frank Vanhecke will head their list.
MEP Vanhecke was defended in the committee by Mr. Guido Naets, who worked for 4 years for the Flemish christian-democrats of CD&V, for 18 years as a journalist for German and Dutch media as a Europe-specialist, and afterwards for 15 years as spokesman for the European parliament itself.
"In the 30 years I have followed Mr. Vanhecke, from the time he became assistant in the EP of Mr. Dillen, I have never seen him do so-called 'racist' things", says Mr. Naets. "Vanhecke is persecuted because he is the symbol of a party that stands for the end of the Belgian state. (...) I ask the European parliament not to be an accomplice in a political lynching and an assault against a radical Flemish party, in which 'racism' is only a pretext. Belgium stands today for the biggest challenge since it seperated itself from the Netherlands in 1830; it would be very unwise for the EP to take a stand in the now ongoing talks between Flemish and Walloons."
The case against MEP Vanhecke is based on a text from another writer in a local leaflet in the small town of Sint-Niklaas in Flanders, in wich an alleged a mistake was made. Despite of the fact that on request of Mr. Vanhecke this was put right with a new leaflet, the Belgian authorities don't want to sue the real author, as the Belgian constitution demands, but want to involve Mr. Vanhecke. This proves the political nature of the case.
